Resilience and Bonding in European Literature for Children and Youth (SABINE)
SABINE is a European literary project focused on bringing outstanding contemporary children’s and youth literature from Europe to Spanish-speaking readers.
The project consists of the translation into Spanish and publication of six high-quality literary and illustrated books for children and adolescents. These works come mainly from lesser-used European languages: two titles originally written in Dutch, two in Swedish, one in Norwegian, and one in German. None of these books had previously been published in Spanish.
Through this selection, SABINE aims to strengthen the long-term transnational circulation of European literature, promoting linguistic diversity and ensuring access to works that are rarely available to Spanish-speaking audiences.
All six titles explore, from different perspectives and artistic approaches, the importance of emotional bonds, care, friendship, and family relationships in childhood and youth. These connections are presented as key elements in the development of resilience: the ability to face difficulties, overcome challenges, and grow through adverse experiences.
The six works that make up SABINE are masterpieces by contemporary illustrators and writers. Both the authors and the translators of the selected books have received the most prestigious awards in the fields of culture and literature. Among the most important distinctions are the European Union Prize for Literature, the Woutertje Pieterse Prize or the National Prize for Best Translation.
One of the fundamental pillars of SABINE is the visibility of literary translation. All the works have been translated by highly respected professionals, whose work is always presented alongside that of the authors. The role of the translator is conceived not only as that of a creator but also as a cultural mediator, essential for stories to travel across languages and cultures.
The project aims to reach a diverse audience not only through high-quality translations and wide distribution in the Spanish-language publishing market, but also through a strong and comprehensive distribution and promotion plan tailored to the needs of each title.
Ultimately, the project seeks to promote transcultural dialogue between European countries through the key role played by translators and to build bridges between different European societies and cultures through the power of art and literature.
SABINE is co-funded by the European Union’s Creative Europe Programme and reflects its commitment to cultural diversity, literary translation and the circulation of European works.
SABINE es un proyecto europeo dedicado a acercar a los lectores de habla hispana algunas de las obras más destacadas de la literatura infantil y juvenil contemporánea europea.
El proyecto consiste en la traducción al español y la publicación de seis libros para niños y jóvenes particularmente relevantes por su gran calidad literaria y artística. Los seis títulos pertenecen principalmente a lenguas consideradas minoritarias: dos obras escritas originalmente en neerlandés, dos en sueco, una en noruego y una en alemán. De este modo, el proyecto contribuye a reforzar la circulación transnacional de la literatura europea a largo plazo, promoviendo la diversidad lingüística y cultural, y facilitando el acceso a obras que rara vez llegan al público hispanohablante.
Los libros seleccionados abordan, desde distintas perspectivas y lenguajes artísticos, la importancia de los vínculos emocionales, el cuidado, la amistad y las relaciones familiares durante la infancia y la juventud. Estos lazos se presentan como elementos esenciales para el desarrollo de la resiliencia, entendida como la capacidad de afrontar dificultades, superar momentos difíciles y crecer a partir de la experiencia.
Los seis trabajos que componen SABINE son obras maestras de ilustradores y escritores contemporáneos que permanecían inéditas hasta ahora en español. Tanto los autores como las traductoras de los libros seleccionados han sido galardonados con los premios más prestigiosos en el ámbito de la cultura y las letras. Entre los reconocimientos más importantes se encuentran el Premio de Literatura de la Unión Europea, el Premio Woutertje Pieterse o el Premio Nacional a la Mejor Traducción.
Uno de los ejes fundamentales de SABINE es la visibilización de la traducción literaria. Todas las obras han sido traducidas por profesionales de reconocido prestigio, cuyo trabajo se presenta siempre junto al de los autores. La figura del traductor se concibe no solo como creador sino como mediador cultural, esencial para que las historias puedan viajar entre lenguas y culturas.
El proyecto se centra en llegar a un público diverso, no solo mediante traducciones de calidad y una amplia distribución en el mercado editorial de habla hispana, sino también mediante un sólido y completo plan de distribución y promoción, adaptado a las necesidades de cada título.
En definitiva, el proyecto pretende promover el diálogo transcultural entre países europeos gracias al papel clave de los traductores y tender puentes entre diferentes sociedades y culturas europeas gracias al poder del arte y la literatura.
SABINE está cofinanciado por el Programa Europa Creativa de la Unión Europea y refleja su compromiso con la diversidad cultural, la traducción literaria y la circulación de obras europeas.
